Svend Pedersen Ruby

Svend Pedersen Ruby was born at Fjaltring on 14 March 1916, the second of the six children of Jens Peder Pedersen Ruby and his wife Marie.  He had one older sister, Johanne, and four younger siblings Anne, Aksel, Ernst and Bodil.  The Ruby family were an old and well-established family in the Fjaltring area.

Svend Ruby was one of many Danish fishermen from the west cost of Jutland to come to Buckie during the war.  In 1945, he married Violet Bowie and opted to remain in Buckie after the end of the war.  He became a naturalised British Subject on 17 May 1950.  For a time he was in business with Christian Marcussen.

He was skipper of the Begonia for many years.  Violet and he lived latterly at 12 Highfield Road, Buckie.  Svend died on 16 June 1994 at Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin.  Violet died four years later on 25 April 1998 at Seafield Hospital, Buckie.  They are both buried in the New Cemetery.
