Rasmus Thorsted Lauersen
Rimsø , Jutland
Rasmus Thorsted Lauersen (sometimes spelt Laürsen) was born at Rimsø north east of Aarhus in central Jutland on 4th April 1896.
He was the second son of Rasmus Laürsen and his second wife Bodil Sørensen. Young Rasmus was given the middle name of Thorsted after his father's first wife who had died young and the family entry in the 1901 Danish Census can be seen to the left. The following pictures of Rimsø were taken by David Riddell, July 2018. |
Rasmus was educated at Rimsø Skole and there is a photograph of him at the school in 1906 (below).
He subsequently married Martha Elfrede Voigt. During the war they fled to Buckie and afterwards decided to remain. Rasmus was naturalised as a British Subject on 29 June 1948 and the papers relating to this are in the National Archives at Kew.
In 1950, when skipper of the Saga, a Seine-net boat owned by the Bell Rock Fishing Company of Aberdeen, he was involved in major rescue in the North Sea when the Saga was damaged and had to be towed to port. The account opposite tells the tale. In it, Rasmus's surname is consistently given (wrongly, as it so often was) as Laurensen. Rasmus and Martha had moved to Bennachie on Cliff Terrace, Buckie, overlooking the harbour. Sometime on the morning of 25th February 1956, Rasmus fell into Cluny Harbour at Buckie and drowned, his body being recovered a short time later. Below is his Death Certificate and the subsequent addendum in the Register of Corrected Entries after the fatal accident enquiry had taken place. The account below of the event is from the Montrose Review of 29 March 1956 Martha Elfrede Lauersen continued to live in Cliff Terrace until her own death in 1974, at the age of 75. |
