Konrad Henriksen Sandøy Kjempenes
Bulandet, Askvoll
Konrad Olai Henriksen Sandøy (later Kjempenes) was born at Bulandet, Askvoll on 18 January 1907. His younger brother, Leif Andreas Henriksen was born the following year. Their parents died when they were young and they were raised in different families. Konrad's surname was Sandøy whilst Leif's was Hillersø.
In 1936, they acquired M/B Buestein (SF 52 A) with Konrad as the skipper. They left Bulandet on 20 November 1941 with ten people on board the boat. Konrad was joined by his wife Astrid (Kjempenes), a man by the name of Gjertsen (of the Scalloway branch of the Shetland Bus) and his girlfriend Borghild, Dagfinn Hugøy, Kai Liset (also of the Scalloway gang), Dagmar Nikøy and two others. They arrived in Lerwick a couple of days later on 22 November 1941. They were in a number of locations across Scotland and it was in Edinburgh, on 18 August 1942 that Astrid gave birth to their daughter, Gunvor Marie Kjempenes. She was later christened in the Sjømannskirken in Leith by Pastor Norman Salvesen (who would soon after also have responsibility for the Sjømannskirken in Buckie.
For much of the war, Konrad and wife Astrid Henriksen Kjempenes lived in 31 Mill Crecent in Buckie during much of their stay in Scotland. |

Konrad, Astrid and Gunvor Kjempenes returned to the Buland in May 1946, one year after the end of the war. Konrad resumed working in the fishing industry. He built his own house where, in 1947, the family moved. However, after a long period of sickness, Astrid died on 5 May 1951, at the age of forty-seven.
On 17 November 1957, Konrad remarried in Denmark to Else Hansen (1919-2001). They had two children. In the 1960s, the whole family moved to Else's home country of Denmark. Konrad later became a Danish citizen. He died on 23 September 1987 and is buried in at Alsted Cemetery in Fjenneslev, Sjælland, Denmark. |
